(FP039) - Framed Print First Billiards Championship in 1870

Framed print from the first year the Billiards Championship was contested in 1870.  The details surrounding this match are very interesting:

  • The match lasted just over 4 1/2 hours and it was the first to 1200 points
  • The trophy cost £120.00 which in today's money would be over £11,500.00!
  • The final was between John Roberts and WIlliam Cook
  • Roberts convinced the committee that the table being made by Thurston's for the match should be modified to have small pockets making it more difficult for his opponent to play pots rather than in-offs
  • 500 tickets were initially on sale for the 800 seat venue but the final estimate was that over 1000 people were witnessing the event

The picture measures 370mm wide and 300mm high.  If you love the print but not the frame of the mount then send us a message as our sister company, Kendal Framing, can re-frame the print or even change the mount in your own personal choice for an additional charge (cost depends on items selected).
