Gary Wilson destroyed Joe O’Connor 9-2 at the BetVictor Scottish Open to claim his first-ever ranking title, eighteen years after becoming a professional snooker player.

Not only did Wilson claim the title and win the BetVictor Scottish Open trophy but the Wallsend cueman also won the top prize of £80,000, and will now move up to the 18th position in the world rankings.

Wilson had the ideal start to the final, opening with a century of 102. However, O’Connor quickly fought back with a break of 99, evening out the score at 1-1. Wilson swiftly took the lead again, heading the mid-session 3-1.

O’Connor tried to restore parity but only managed to reach 3-2. After this play, Wilson completely took over the game and won the rest of the frames to achieve victory at 6-2.

Gary Wilson commented to Eurosport, “I'm absolutely over the moon. I'm well into my career now and the longer it goes on you think, 'am I ever going to win one?', and especially with the run of form I've had the last couple of years.

"I've never even looked like getting anywhere near this stage; it's absolutely unbelievable to be honest. I'm just so, so happy. I've worked so hard for so many years, been in so many situations where I thought it would never come."
