(M1426) Rare 7ft Wind-Up Tulip Leg Mahogany Snooker/Pool Diner by George Wright
A Rare 7ft Antique Mahogany Wind-Up Snooker/Pool Diner by George Wright with Hand Carved Tulip Legs.
We will restore this snooker table while protecting its character and history. We commit to keeping original materials intact, while all new parts, including cushion rubbers, pocket leathers, and pocket nets, are replaced to match the originals perfectly. The restoration culminates in a beautifully revived woodwork finish (cleaned, waxed, touched-up) and the installation of a new custom-coloured cloth, allowing you to personalize its final look.
A truly exceptional piece of Victorian craftsmanship, this 7ft mahogany convertible snooker/dining table is a testament to the innovative design of George Wright & Co. Dating to around 1870, this table seamlessly transitions from a magnificent dining surface to a playable snooker or pool table, making it the perfect dual-purpose antique for the modern home.
The table boasts a remarkable, rare geared wind-up mechanism, operated by a removable handle inserted at one corner. This precision engineering allows the playing surface to be effortlessly adjusted between dining height and the correct snooker playing height, a hallmark of George Wright's early expertise in billiard diners. Constructed from rich, high-quality mahogany, the table displays a beautiful, deep patina that only age can provide. Furthermore, four wonderfully decorative, hand-carved tulip legs support the frame, showcasing the elegant and ornate style popular in the mid-Victorian era. This is a prestigious piece by George Wright & Co. of London, one of the most respected names in antique billiard table manufacturing.
The table is of a size to comfortably seat 8-10 people for dinner and an excellent size to allow the playing of snooker or pool.
George Wright & Co. - A Legacy of Excellence
George Wright (born c. 1847) founded his celebrated billiard table manufacturing business, George Wright & Co., around 1868 and quickly became a leader in the industry, initially specializing in ingenious Billiard Diner Tables like this one. Operating from Westminster Bridge Road, London, the firm was known for its quality, craftsmanship, and innovative mechanical designs. While the company was formally established in 1868, this table's estimated date of circa 1870 suggests it may be a rare example from George Wright’s very early work, highlighting its unique historical importance. George Wright & Co. went on to win Gold medals at international exhibitions and was later appointed to supply the Royal Household, solidifying their reputation as master craftsmen of the Victorian era.
